| Nash County Is a Twinkle in State's
Star
North Carolina's Food and Nutrition program was a shining star at the annual U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Food and Nutrition Services Awards Dinner and Ceremony in Atlanta on June 5, 2007. The State was the recipient of this top national award, the 2007 Director Cup Award, which has become known as the "Traveling Junior Stanley Cup". The Award recognizes excellence in the areas of payment accuracy, claims management, and program access. Nash County's Food and Nutrition program was recently honored by a visit from "Junior Stanley" for its contribution to the states' success. Nash County's program has consistently maintained high accuracy rates, having achieved 98.02% in 2005, 100% in 2006 and 98.98% in 2007. |
Emergency Financial Assistance:

Crisis Intervention Program (CIP)--pays for heating and cooling expenses when families are in a crisis. |

CP & L Project Share -- pays for heating and cooling expenses when families are in a crisis. Limited to CP&L customers. |

c.
|
Emergency Assistance--short-term financial help for families with children under age 21 in crisis that is not related to heating and cooling. Used primarily for rent and utilities. |

|
County General Assistance (GA)--financial assistance when no other resources are available. Primarily used for purchase of medicine. |

|
Pauper Burials -- pays toward the cost of burial when no other resources are available. |

Eye Care Program:
Pays the cost of eye exams, treatment, glasses, ocular prosthesis,
hospitalization and surgery.

Low Income Energy Assistance (LIEAP):
One time payment for heating expenses. Applications taken in the fall,
checks are mailed to clients in February.

The Program Integrity Unit is a program support unit that devotes maximum efforts toward the prevention, detection, and recovery of overpayments in the public assistance programs.
The unit also seeks to maintain the integrity of the public assistance programs by deterring fraud through education, early detection and prosecution.
The crime of welfare fraud is committed when people:
(1) receive, or attempt to receive, welfare benefits by providing the
Department of Social Services with false and inaccurate information, or (2)
by withholding information needed to correctly determine eligibility for
welfare benefits.
